From our front porch we could see this bright blue ship making it’s way into the Cape Cod Canal. This shot was actually taken from the railroad bridge so we could really get a good look. This is a Great Lakes boat and not something you see every day in the Cape Cod Canal.
One of the things I really enjoy about where we spend our time at the Cape, is that we have the opportunity to see, up close and personal, large commercial ships like this one. Part of it is probably the fascination that the suckers actually float. Big metal things in water are supposed to sink, right?
But if you feel the same way (OK, you might understand why they float better than I do), we are not alone. You can actually chart the progress of this and many other Great Lakes boats on http://www.boatnerd.com/.
I’d like to mention that this was taken at 15mm setting on my lens, so maybe that helps give some of you an idea of how big a ship this is.
I took a number of photographs…imagine my disappointment when I realized I had neglected to change my ISO from 1600. Why was it at 1600? I don’t know…I was probably trying something out and forgot to put it back. I may have to replace my “Check White Balance” label that I have on my camera. What this means is that at 100% the photos are grainy and have noise in the dark bits. I have played with my friend Drew’s camera a number of times and surprised him that same way when he had to take a photo. Who knew there was Photography Karma?

I think this photo illustrates the kind extreme weather we had this summer. Many thunderstorms and day after day of enormous clouds. Mountainous yet fluffy. The kind of clouds you look like you could go hiking on. Really big clouds.
